Starting Monday, August 17, 2026 on a Monday to Friday week, 180 school days end on Friday, April 23, 2027. Add Thanksgiving week, two weeks at Christmas and a March spring break, and the last day moves to Friday, May 21, 2027.

Before the year starts, most families want to know one thing: if we begin on this date and take these weeks off, when do we finish? Pick your first day, the days of the week you teach, how many days or hours you're aiming for, and your breaks. The planner counts forward one school day at a time and gives you the last day, the number of school days in each month, and a year-at-a-glance calendar you can print and hang up.

How it works

Worked example: 180 days starting August 17, 2026

Start on Monday, August 17, 2026, teach Monday to Friday, and aim for 180 school days.

  • No breaks at all: 180 days at 5 a week is exactly 36 weeks, so the last day is Friday, April 23, 2027.
  • With three breaks: Thanksgiving week (November 23 to 27), a winter break from December 21 to January 1, and a spring break from March 15 to 19. Those breaks cover 5 + 10 + 5 = 20 weekdays, which is 4 more weeks of school. The last day moves to Friday, May 21, 2027.
  • With the breaks and federal holidays skipped: five holidays land on school days: Labor Day (September 7), Columbus Day (October 12), Veterans Day (November 11), Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January 18) and Presidents' Day (February 15). Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day already fall inside the breaks, so they don't cost anything extra. Five days is one more week, and the last day becomes Friday, May 28, 2027.

With the three breaks and no holidays skipped, the months don't come out even: August has 11 school days, November 16, December 14, March 18 and May 15, while September, October and April each have 22. That's worth knowing if you plan curriculum by the month.

Worked example: a four-day week

Some families teach Monday to Thursday and keep Fridays for co-op, field trips or catching up. With the same August 17 start, no breaks and a 180-day target, four days a week takes 180 ÷ 4 = 45 weeks, and the last day is Thursday, June 24, 2027. Add the three breaks from the first example and the last day moves to Thursday, July 22, 2027, so a four-day week leaves less room for time off before summer.

Planning by hours

Switch Plan by to hours if your target is a number of hours. The planner divides the hours by the hours you teach on a typical school day to get the days needed. At 4.5 hours a day, 900 hours is exactly 200 days, and from an August 17 start on a Monday to Friday week with no breaks, day 200 is Friday, May 21, 2027.

When the hours don't divide evenly, the planner rounds up, because a part day still has to be taught. At 4 hours a day, 990 hours is 247.5 days, so the plan needs 248.

Which holidays are skipped

Tick Skip US federal holidays and the planner skips the eleven holidays set by 5 U.S.C. § 6103: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington's Birthday (Presidents' Day), Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. The dates are worked out by rule for every year, such as the first Monday in September for Labor Day or the fourth Thursday in November for Thanksgiving, so a plan that starts in any year gets the right days.

A holiday on a weekend moves to a weekday, following the practice OPM describes for federal employees: "If a holiday falls on a Saturday, for most Federal employees, the preceding Friday will be treated as a holiday for pay and leave purposes." A Sunday holiday moves to the Monday after. In the 2026–27 year, that's why Independence Day is observed on Friday, July 3, 2026, and Juneteenth on Friday, June 18, 2027. The full list for the year is in the table below the planner.

The day after Thanksgiving isn't a federal holiday, so the planner won't skip it. If you take it off, add it as a one-day break, or make your Thanksgiving break cover the whole week as in the example above.

State minimums

The planner doesn't know your state's rule unless you pick one from Use a state's figure, which fills in the target for you. New York asks for 180 days and also sets hours: 900 a year for grades 1 to 6 and 990 for grades 7 to 12. Pennsylvania accepts either 180 days or the same hour figures, with 900 hours covering kindergarten through grade 6. North Carolina has no day count; its law asks for a regular schedule during at least nine calendar months of the year. Florida and Texas set no minimum number of days or hours for home education. Colorado fills in a 172-day target and leaves Plan by on days: its law states a daily average rather than a separate annual hours figure, so there's no hours target to offer instead. Each state's guide covers the rest of its rules, from notice to testing.

If your state counts hours, plan by hours; if it counts days, plan by days. Once the year is underway, the attendance tracker logs what you actually taught and checks it against the same figures.

Your plan is saved in this browser only and never sent anywhere. Export backup (JSON) keeps a copy, and Start from the example puts the 180-day plan above back in place.
